A Quiet Revolution in Venice's Waterways: The Arrival of Electric Water Taxis

Venice, the city of canals, is making a significant stride towards a greener and cleaner future with the introduction of its first fully electric water taxi, named Lucietta. This zero-emission vessel, designed specifically for Venice's labyrinthine waterways, is set to revolutionise the city's waterborne transport sector.

Lucietta, a 9.3-meter-long electric water taxi, can carry up to 14 passengers and boasts a modern design inspired by Venetian tradition. With a height of only 2.1 meters, it can effortlessly navigate under low bridges, making it an ideal fit for the city's narrow canals.

The electric water taxi, a collaboration between Milan-based Nauta Yachts and Murano-based Cantiere Serenella, is powered by a 200 kW electric motor and a 180 kWh battery pack, reaching a top speed of 30 knots (about 35 mph). Remarkably, Lucietta can spend an entire workday cruising at regulated speeds in the lagoon without needing to recharge.

Lucietta's carbon-fiber hull and incorporation of recycled glass from Murano glassworks underscore its commitment to sustainability. The vessel's silent operation offers a stark contrast to the noisy petrol and diesel watercraft that have long been a source of pollution in Venice.

The revolution in sustainable mobility and tourism is being driven by the need to address environmental concerns and reduce pollution. Fabio Bocchiola, CEO of Repower Italia, emphasises the importance of electric boating in this revolution. Lucietta's introduction marks a notable step towards cleaner, quieter transport in Venice, where air and water pollution from traditional fossil-fuel-powered water taxis have long been issues.

As Lucietta initially services high-profile Venice events, there are plans to expand its operations into regular water taxi routes. This shift promises to significantly reduce local pollution and improve the city's marine tourism sustainability.

The Swiss company is making efforts to get Lucietta into the Venice International Film Festival, further showcasing its eco-friendly cruising capabilities. Meanwhile, another player in the sustainable mobility and tourism sector, Nuvolari Lenard, unveiled a 14-seat hybrid water taxi back in 2020. This hybrid water taxi will be a star at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival from August 27 to September 6.

However, the pace at which countries adopt new policies and strategies for energy transition varies due to an evolving geopolitical landscape. The geopolitical landscape is influencing the speed at which sustainable mobility and tourism solutions like Lucietta and the Nuvolari Lenard's hybrid water taxi are adopted and integrated into cities like Venice.

In conclusion, Lucietta's introduction marks the beginning of a quiet revolution in Venice’s waterborne transport sector, promising to reduce pollution and enhance the visitor experience through eco-friendly cruising along the canals. This shift towards cleaner, greener transport solutions is a crucial step in preserving Venice, a city heavily impacted by pollution, and in promoting sustainable tourism practices worldwide.
