Electric ground support vehicles set to make debut at Terminal 6 of JFK Airport, pooled for use.
John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is set to make a significant leap towards sustainability with the introduction of an all-electric ground support equipment (eGSE) fleet at Terminal 6 (T6). This innovative initiative, a partnership between The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, JFK Millennium Partners (JMP), and Fortbrand Services, marks a milestone as the first airport in North America to implement a common-use eGSE system.
The eGSE fleet, scheduled to be operational by 2026, will consist of ten shared units for each of the terminal's ten gates. This pooled system is designed to enhance efficiency and reduce costs, while also contributing to the Port Authority's commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
The eGSE fleet will be monitored and maintained in real-time by JMP and Fortbrand, ensuring compliance with operational standards and enhancing safety. Telematics software will provide valuable data on the equipment's location, battery status, and maintenance needs, enabling proactive maintenance and minimising downtime.
The implementation of this system is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 2,500 metric tonnes annually. T6, which is being developed in two phases, with the first six gates expected to open in 2026, and the entire terminal projected to be completed by 2028, will also incorporate various sustainability features. These include high-efficiency building systems, over 4,000 solar panels, stormwater capture and reuse, and a commitment to divert 90% of waste through recycling during construction and operation.
The setup at T6 includes on-site and remote charging stations, ensuring the eGSE fleet is always ready for operation. This initiative is part of the Port Authority's mandate for a transition to zero-emission ground service equipment at the region's major airports, with a target for all commercially available GSE fleets to be zero-emission by 2030.
In 2025, the Port Authority, in partnership with Realterm and Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), opened a $270m consolidated cargo handling centre at JFK. With the introduction of the eGSE fleet at T6, the airport is poised to further solidify its position as a leader in sustainable aviation practices.
This game-changing development for airlines at JFK Terminal 6 is a testament to the commitment of the Port Authority, JMP, and Fortbrand Services towards creating a greener and more efficient airport infrastructure.
