DT Swiss ER 1600 Spline: Aluminium Endurance Wheelset for Varied Terrains
DT Swiss unveils the ER 1600 Spline wheelset, an aluminum option in their Endurance range, crafted for extended rides across diverse terrains. The wheelset delivers excellent value, priced higher than many aluminum options but lower than most carbon wheels.
The ER 1600 Spline boasts aluminum rims that are sleeve-jointed and hooked, compatible with tubeless or tubed tires. They sport an inner width of 22mm and outer width of 26mm, making them ideal for wider tires and varied terrains. The wheels employ DT aero comp straight pull spokes and DT ProLock Squorx ProHead nipples, with aluminum nipples susceptible to corrosion and cracking in salty conditions. Brass nipples would enhance durability in harsh conditions.
The ER 1600 Spline is available with either a 23mm or 30mm deep rim, with a claimed weight of 1,657g for the 23mm version and a system weight limit of 120kg. The test rider found these wheels to convey a sense of speed and lightness, spinning up more easily than anticipated, and providing a smoother ride than narrower tires. The 350 Ratchet System 36 SL hubs offer a 10° engagement and tool-free servicing, ensuring reliable performance.
The DT Swiss ER 1600 Spline wheelset surpassed expectations, making a compelling case for aluminum wheels over lower-end carbon ones. They are well-suited for winter training, commuting, or long-distance events, offering superior hubs, good spokes, and wide rims. Despite the aluminum nipples' vulnerability to corrosion, the wheelset provides excellent value as an upgrade option.
