2025 So Far, Six Drone Sightings at BER Airport - Drone Incidents Disrupt German Airports, BER Hit Six Times This Year
Drone incidents continue to pose a significant threat to air traffic in Germany. This year alone, six such incidents have disrupted operations at Berlin's BER airport, with no public disclosure of the operators involved. Meanwhile, DFS has recorded 172 cases of air traffic disruption by drones, surpassing last year's total.
Drone sightings are a growing concern for airports nationwide. BER ranks in the middle among major German airports in terms of drone sightings, with Frankfurt/Main leading with 37 sightings in the first nine months. Nearly three-quarters of these incidents occur near airports, despite a ban on drone flights within 1.5 kilometers of these areas.
DFS, the German air traffic control agency, takes immediate action upon drone sightings. They either grant clearances for unaffected areas or temporarily suspend all take-offs and landings in extreme cases. Recently, Munich airport faced a two-day shutdown due to drone sightings, with BER avoiding such maximum consequences so far.
Drone incidents around airports pose a serious threat to air traffic. With 172 cases recorded this year, DFS and airport authorities must continue to monitor and address these issues. The identity of the operator involved in the six incidents at BER remains unknown, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement and regulation of drone usage near airports.
