In the heart of Germany, the picturesque state of Saarland is making significant strides in digitalizing its public transport system. The "Digitalization in Public Transport" Competence Center, launched in 2022, is spearheading these transformative efforts.

Located in Volklingen, the Competence Center has been instrumental in bundling knowledge, generating synergies, and driving transformation in the transport sector. With many meaningful and future-oriented projects already created and still in development, the Center is set to revolutionize the way people travel within Saarland.

One of the key initiatives is the implementation of on-demand services "flitsaar", which has seen significant success. The service offers a more flexible and convenient travel option for residents, making public transport more attractive.

The Competence Center is also focusing on automated transport technologies, digital communication infrastructure, and AI-driven innovations within the public transport sector. For instance, 1,100 new on-board computers will be installed in all saarVV buses, allowing for card payments and the use of Apple and Google Pay. This move towards cashless payment options is part of a broader strategy to modernize ticketing systems and improve operational efficiency.

Saarland is taking a pioneering role in the nationwide implementation of MOTICS by 2026. MOTICS, a security standard, simplifies ticket control and increases security, ensuring a safer travel experience for all.

The Center is also developing a statewide customer dialogue platform for public transport. This platform aims to help resolve customer inquiries efficiently and improve public transport. Additionally, the future of the KCD beyond 2025 is currently being discussed, suggesting that the Center's impact will continue to be felt in the years to come.

Minister of Transport Petra Berg visited the Competence Center as part of her summer tour, emphasizing the importance of uniform timetable information for all transport options, timely and secure payment options in every bus, and a central point of contact for customer communication. These initiatives, she believes, will make public transport in Saarland significantly more attractive.

Subscriptions, including the Germany ticket, can be purchased via the Saarfahrplan app, making travel even more convenient for residents. Furthermore, a digital semester ticket is now available, offering students a cost-effective and efficient way to travel.

The Competence Center is a testament to Saarland's commitment to digital innovation and its engagement in transformation studies. As the Center continues to develop and grow, it promises a more comfortable and efficient mobility experience for citizens of Saarland.

Finance plays a crucial role in supporting the developments at the Competence Center, as the state government has allocated a high single-digit million-euro amount for the Center's operations.

With the implementation of card payments through 1,100 new on-board computers in all saarVV buses and the introduction of the digital semester ticket, the Center aims to improve operational efficiency and foster a lifestyle that embraces technology in public transport.
