Despite my disinterest in the upcoming Switch 2 console, a single game has the potential to compel me to part with my money.
New and Improved Rant:
Hey there, fellow Nintendo Switch enthusiasts! Let me tell ya, this little device has been a godsend during the pandemic lockdowns, keeping me sane with the charming chaos of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. That's right, I'm a big fan of the Switch - but you don't want to hear me gush about my love for it. No, what I'm here to talk about is a certain Japanese franchise that's missing in action for the Switch 2.
Can you guess what it is? If you said Pokémon, you'd be spot on! I, like millions of other fans, have been eagerly waiting for Nintendo to learn their lesson and give us a mainline Pokémon game as a launch title. But, alas, I'm still waiting, and it's driving me up the wall!
I'm not asking for miracles, people. Just a decent Pokémon game on the new console at launch. I mean, c'mon, we had Pokémon Dash back in the day, but that was more of a sports minigame than a full-fledged Pokémon adventure. And don't get me wrong, I'm the first one to shell out my hard-earned cash for a new Pokémon game - am I a hypocrite? Maybe. But I think it's fair to want something we love to be better.
Now, let's talk about the Switch 2's lackluster launch lineup. I don't want to mince words here; it's pretty underwhelming. There's a smattering of third-party games, but the footage we've seen of Cyberpunk 2077 running on the new console doesn't exactly leave me drooling with anticipation. Some upgraded OG Switch games for an extra ten bucks? That's nothing to write home about. Don't get me started on Puyo Pop Tetris 2S...
We have a new Mario Kart, but no mainline Mario game. We have Super Mario Party Jamboree, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A coming soon, but not for a few months. And let's not forget that Z-A is also slated for release on the Switch I already own - but it'll probably look like garbage.
Where's the promised Zelda game, you ask? Nowhere in sight. As for Metroid Prime 4, well, it's still in development, but we've been waiting for it since 2017 - and it's also a Switch 1 title. Great.
Look, I get it. Launch lineups have never been Nintendo's strong suit. Half of the Wii's launch titles were mediocre movie and TV show tie-ins, and the two biggest DS launch titles were both Nintendo 64 remakes (Mario and Rayman). But come on, Nintendo.
I've got one simple solution for you: give us a new Pokémon game, and I guarantee the Switch 2 will fly off the shelves. Hey, maybe I'm not as hard to please as I thought.
