Denmark opts for SurePay to launch nationwide Voice-over-Internet Protocol service nationwide
Denmark has become the first non-Euro country to implement a nationwide Verification of Payee (VoP) service, following in the footsteps of Australia which launched its Confirmation of Payee system in July 2025.
The VoP service, which is set to reduce impersonation fraud and misdirected payments, checks whether the recipient's name matches the provided IBAN. This service is similar to the one implemented in Australia, aiming to minimise scams and misdirected payments.
In Denmark, SurePay has been chosen by Finance Denmark to provide the VoP service. The partnership empowers Danish banks to proactively fight fraud and comply with upcoming EU regulation. With over 200 financial institutions already using SurePay's solution across Europe, the partnership connects Danish banks to a broader network.
David-Jan Janse, CEO of SurePay, expressed his support for Finance Denmark and its members in implementing a best-in-class VoP solution. Michael Busk-Jepsen, executive director at Finance Denmark, emphasised SurePay's deep expertise and insight in applying Verification of Payee across various payment scenarios, including individuals and small and large businesses.
The new Instant Payments Regulation, effective in October this year, will make VoP mandatory across Europe. Denmark's plans are part of the SEPA-wide VoP introduction, primarily impacting Euro-using or SEPA countries. However, no other non-Euro countries with confirmed national VoP services and timelines are indicated in the search results.
Besides Denmark, other non-Euro countries planning to implement a national VoP or equivalent service include Australia. In April last year, SurePay joined the cloud-based Temenos Exchange partner ecosystem, making its VoP and Confirmation of Payee (CoP) solutions more easily accessible to banks and financial institutions.
Using the SurePay API, banks can access VoP, CoP, and SWIFT Beneficiary Account Validation via Temenos Exchange. Since its founding in 2016, SurePay has performed more than nine billion VoP checks.
For those seeking details about non-Euro countries beyond Australia or outside Europe planning VoP-like services, additional sources beyond the current results would be required. Non-Euro countries, like Denmark, are required to comply with the VoP regulation by 2027.
