Could it be a sneak peek of the 2026 Mazda CX-5 hybrid ahead of its official unveiling?

The automotive world is abuzz with excitement as leaked images of the next-generation Mazda CX-5 have allegedly been unveiled ahead of its global reveal. The new model is set to enter a competitive market segment in 2026, populated by both plug-less and plug-in hybrid options.

The leaked image, if authentic, seems to closely mirror spy shots of the new CX-5 that have been circulating for some time. The overall shape and size of the new CX-5 look very similar to the current model, with a new front light profile flanking a tweaked grille which has a similar look to the Chinese-market EZ-60.

Mazda will launch a new in-house dedicated electric platform for future products in 2027, designed for efficiency reasons and intended for assembly on the same lines as combustion vehicles. However, the new CX-5 will not be the first vehicle to utilize this platform. That honour will go to the SkyActiv-Z powertrain, due in 2027, which will include a range of more efficient engines that combine the knowledge from the brand's current SkyActiv-G and previous SkyActiv-X powertrains with a new in-house hybrid drive system.

The CX-5 will continue alongside the CX-50 even in markets where the mid-size alternative is sold. The CX-50 shares a bulkier look with the US-market CX-60 and CX-90 and was initially thought to be the CX-5's replacement. However, Mazda has shot down suggestions of adding the left-hand drive CX-50 or the electric and range-extender EZ-60 to the local line-up.

The new-generation Mazda CX-5 will launch with the latest hybridized engine line called 'SkyActiv-Z'. Mazda has not yet specified whether the new in-house hybrid system will be closer to Toyota's 'e-CVT' hybrid transaxle or the single-clutch based system used in the CX-60 and up.

The market segment in which the new CX-5 will compete is a crowded one. Some of the competitors include the new-generation RAV4, Subaru Forester, Tiggo 7 PHEV (the most affordable plug-in in New Zealand), BYD Sealion 6, and Haval H6 HEV.

The new-generation CX-5 is expected to launch before the end of 2027, and with its sleek design and advanced hybrid technology, it's sure to make a splash in the automotive industry. The trio of CX-5, EZ-60, and CX-50 gives Mazda a diverse set of mid-size SUVs to choose from for the local market.

Despite the leaked images, Mazda has not yet officially confirmed the details of the new CX-5. We will continue to keep you updated as more information becomes available.
