Commencement of novel battery production at Accumotive Kamenz

In a significant move towards electrification, Mercedes-Benz has commenced the series production of advanced lithium-ion batteries at its Accumotive facility in Kamenz, Germany. These batteries, the 'heart' of the new fully electric Mercedes-Benz CLA, promise short charging times and an estimated range of around 790 kilometers[1][4].

Accumotive, a competence center of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, has been at the forefront of electric mobility for over 13 years, with the Kamenz site producing more than two million batteries since 2012[1][3]. The plant, equipped with cutting-edge automation and precision manufacturing systems, integrates eco-friendly processes, including the use of renewable energy sources[1].

Jörg Burzer, a board member at Mercedes-Benz, spoke about the battery production, highlighting its importance in the company's transition towards a fully electric lineup by 2030[5]. The batteries are produced on a 350-meter-long production line, with Accumotive Kamenz investing a three-digit million amount in the new production line[6].

Looking ahead, Accumotive will expand its capabilities to include the reconditioning and recycling of used batteries at the same Kamenz site, starting in 2026. The 'Battery ReUse Centre Europe' will handle factory repairs and reconditioning of earlier Mercedes-Benz battery generations, enabling these refurbished batteries to be reused as spare parts within the company’s aftersales network[2]. This initiative underscores Mercedes-Benz's commitment to environmental responsibility and circular economy principles in their battery production and management[2].

The location of installation for these batteries is the plant in Rastatt[7]. With this latest development, Mercedes-Benz continues its success story of battery production in the Lausitz region[8]. The batteries are expected to power the new fully electric Mercedes-Benz CLA, marking another milestone in the brand's electrification journey.
