Electronic identification now accepted for Colorado drivers, yet it's still advisable to maintain a physical copy for safety reasons.

Colorado motorists can employ digital identification instead of conventional ID cards; however, it is strongly advised to still maintain a physical copy.

In the bustling heart of Colorado, technology and convenience are merging to simplify everyday tasks. One such example is the My Colorado app, a digital ID solution that's free for everyone to use.

This innovative application allows users to show an electronic version of their ID, making it a handy alternative to physical copies. However, it's essential to remember that while Colorado does accept electronic documents as proof of identification, other states may not. So, if you're planning a road trip or flight outside of Colorado, it's best to carry a physical ID for safety and compliance.

Brian Sherrod, the First Alert Traffic Tracker Reporter at News Colorado and a multimedia journalist, has been keeping a close eye on this development. If you have a story idea for Brian, feel free to send an email to [email protected].

The My Colorado app is not just a digital ID, but also a platform where you can obtain an electronic driver's license. However, it's important to note that Colorado drivers are not required to carry a physical identification card while driving. Nevertheless, troopers recommend keeping a physical ID with you, particularly in case of a car crash, for added protection.

The proposal for a change in this policy, State Bill SB24-090, was introduced by Senator Chris Hansen. This bill aimed to require drivers to physically carry their ID while driving. However, at the end of the 2024 session of the General Assembly, the bill was postponed, meaning it was never approved.

It's also worth mentioning that an earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that drivers must carry a physical driver's license in Colorado and would be cited if it was not on hand. This information is not accurate.

Lastly, when traveling out of state by driving or flying, Colorado drivers are required to have a physical ID. Unfortunately, an electronic ID cannot be used to fly out of the Denver International Airport.

To download the My Colorado app, navigate to your apps, type in My Colorado, and fill in the blanks. With this digital tool at your fingertips, Colorado residents can stay connected and secure, all while embracing the state's forward-thinking approach to technology.
