Chrome's Artificial Intelligence upgrade: 10 groundbreaking features that transform your internet experience
Chrome is set to revolutionize its browser experience with a series of AI-driven updates, starting from the coming weeks and months. The announcements, outlined in a blog post on September 18, aim to improve online security, Google search, and tab/website organization.
One of the key features is the introduction of an AI password agent. This agent will allow users to change saved passwords with a single click on supported sites like Spotify, Duolingo, and H&M. It's an expansion of existing password features in Chrome such as password alerts and autofilling.
Another significant update is the AI-enhanced Safe Browsing Enhanced Protection mode, which includes Gemini Nano. This mode will help identify tech support scams and block malicious sites, providing an extra layer of security for users. Subscribers to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra have already seen some of these features.
The rollout may take a few days for users to see the updates in Chrome. One of the most anticipated features, the ability for users to ask follow-up questions and receive AI responses, is expected to launch before the end of September.
Gemini, the Google browser extension, is gradually rolling out starting June 2025 for Google AI Pro or Ultra subscribers on Windows and Mac in the U.S., with availability expanding over time to more users without a Google AI plan and additional languages planned for the future. Gemini will be able to read website history, allowing users to give it prompts like 'what was that blog I read on back to school shopping?' to find sites previously visited.
The new features can also help with tab organization. An experimental Split Tabs feature is being developed, and the Gemini Assistant will allow users to ask questions about content in open tabs.
For those who prefer browsers without AI, alternatives include Vivaldi, which is built for online security, and Firefox, which is also getting an AI chatbot.
In addition to these updates, Chrome will use AI to learn user preferences to determine which sites are allowed to send notifications. The AI password agent and the new AI Mode will be accessible from the address bar (omnibox) in Chrome, allowing users to ask longer and more complex questions.
Google plans to add agentic capabilities to Gemini, allowing it to handle tasks like booking a haircut or buying food over the next few months. A new Gemini button will appear on the desktop browser.
As these developments unfold, it's recommended to follow Tom's Guide on Google News for updates. The updates to Chrome are set to make AI an integral part of most aspects of the browser, transforming the way users navigate and interact with the internet.
