Chiquita Brings Bananas to Italy for the First Time
Chiquita is set to cultivate bananas in Italy for the first time, marking a significant step in the company's relationship with the country. The project, due to start in Sicily, is expected to bring the first Italian-grown bananas to market by 2026.
Chiquita sees this venture as a 'double opportunity'. It aims to strengthen ties with Italian consumers and promote local production. The company is starting with an initial phase of planting 20,000 organic banana suckers. This is a first for Italy, where banana suckers were previously only known as ornamental plants.
The project comes as Italian agricultural businesses, particularly in the south, have been investing in tropical crops like avocados and mangos for some time. Climate change is enabling this shift, with southern Italy now suitable for tropical fruits such as avocados, mangos, papayas, and passion fruits. Chiquita is the first major brand to venture into tropical fruit cultivation in Italy.
The banana as an 'Italian product' is more than just a label. It connects a global brand with Italy's renowned agricultural quality. Chiquita's project represents an important step in developing the relationship between the company and Italy, and could potentially benefit from the advancing tropicalization of the country's climate.
