CBS Los Angeles Debuts Advanced AR/VR Production Facility
In sun-soaked Los Angeles, CBS Los Angeles (KCBS-KCAL) kicked off a cutting-edge chapter with the unveiling of their brand-spanking-new AR/VR technology studio on June 11. Metropolitan weatherman extraordinaire, Paul Deanno, hosted the grand debut during the 9 a.m. newscast.
You've likely heard whispers of CBS Stations dabbling in futuristic AR/VR tech before - pioneers in the field, really. But it all started back at KPIX San Francisco, with the development of this pioneering technology. Now, they're spreading the love across their network, with CBS Los Angeles just being the seventh station - and the most advanced - to roll out the system.
Nestled in the snazzy, brand-new KCAL News studio, this tech-driven haven spans a whopping 68 feet by 50 feet (that's over 3,400 square feet, tech heads!). It's the largest of its kind within the CBS Stations Group and the only fully AR/VR-enabled news studio in Southern California. Though you might find a comparable facility at CBS Bay Area/KPIX, this bad boy takes the crown as the region's immersive storytelling champ.
Tim Wieland, the regional president and general manager at CBS Los Angeles, beamed with pride, declaring, "We're stoked to be the first in Southern California to bring this level of technology to our viewers. This studio is set to redefine how we deliver weather and sports - making complex data more accessible, engaging, and visually stunning."
Broadcast stations in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Miami, and Denver are hopping on the AR/VR bandwagon too, using the technology to boost weather coverage, offering audiences a more interactive and informed understanding of the elements that touch their lives.
Jennifer Mitchell, the brains behind CBS Stations' AR/VR rollout nationwide, explained, "We dived into this adventure two years ago with KPIX in the Bay Area, aiming to invest in local journalism and deliver news in ways that resonate with today's audiences. Bringing this technology to the nation's second-largest media market was a no-brainer - it's all about standing out with innovation and proving our leadership in storytelling."
So, get ready, LA, your weather and sports reports are about to take a leap forward into the future!
