Burrowing Underground Instead of Excavating: Rapid Subterranean Depth Reach of the SuedLink Cable
In a significant development for power line construction, the SuedLink project in Bavaria will be employing the cable plowing method for 42 km of its 130 km. This method, known for its gentler approach, is set to offer numerous benefits, particularly for agriculture.
The cable plowing method, which allows for immediate use of the area after laying, is reported to be faster in terms of renaturation. This is a welcome advantage, considering the lengthy construction process of the SuedLink project, a 543 km long direct current line, slated for completion by 2027.
The consortium of construction companies Max Streicher (Deggendorf) and Josef Rädlinger Bauunternehmen (Cham) will be responsible for the laying of the SuedOstLink transmission line in Bavaria using the plough method. The plough operation will be handled by SpiderPlow (Mühldorf am Inn), with the plough itself developed by Walter Föckersperger GmbH (Wurmsham).
This method offers advantages for all parties involved, particularly for agriculture, due to fewer interventions and shorter closure times. However, it's important to note that the soil is significantly moved during the construction process, leading to crop loss for farmers.
The protests against SuedLink, which have been ongoing for many years, are primarily due to the impact on agricultural regions and the long-term effects on soil. The disturbed soil structure and compactions caused by the construction can cause problems for years to come with the standard open construction method used in SuedLink.
The official construction of SuedLink began in Bavaria in August. Despite the ongoing protests, the Federal Network Agency has approved the last section of the power highway from Saxony-Anhalt to Bavaria.
The benefits of the cable plowing method have been highlighted in a content piece published by the Bavarian Agricultural Weekly. The piece emphasises the method's potential to facilitate a smoother and quicker energy transition, all while minimising disruptions to agricultural activities.
Politicians, associations, and property owners have asked TenneT, the company responsible for SuedLink, to use the cable plowing method in the laying of the SuedOstLink in Bavaria. The switch to this method is a step towards addressing the concerns of those affected by the construction and towards a greener, more efficient power line construction process.
