Brother Weiss Romania installs solar power system at Popescu-Leordeni logistics center
In a significant move towards sustainability, Gebruder Weiss, the global full-service logistics provider headquartered in Lauterach, Austria, has installed photovoltaic systems across its European locations. The most recent installation can be found at its logistics hub in Popești-Leordeni, Romania.
The system, which covers approximately 1,635 square metres on the roof of its cross-dock and logistics warehouse, includes 674 solar panels with an installed capacity of 300 kWp. This installation is expected to generate over 1,300 MWh of electricity per year, enough to power both the office building and warehouse operations.
This shift towards renewable energy is expected to reduce the company's reliance on traditional energy sources and achieve about 20% energy autonomy. In fact, these systems have already collectively cut more than 2,700 tons of CO2 emissions, a reduction that is expected to increase significantly in the coming years.
Gebruder Weiss's commitment to sustainability doesn't stop at solar power. The company is also experimenting with electric vehicle deliveries, aiming for around 13,000 electric vehicles by 2024. Additionally, it is trialing an electric truck. These initiatives are part of the company's broader plan to build an energy-efficient logistics infrastructure.
With these changes, Gebruder Weiss estimates that 60% of its current energy needs will now be met with renewable sources. This represents a significant step forward in the company's journey towards a greener future.
Gebruder Weiss Romania is not stopping at Popești-Leordeni. The company is considering expanding its renewable energy initiative to its Sibiu hub. However, as of the current information, there are no publicly specified other Gebruder Weiss locations in Romania planned for photovoltaic installations to support their sustainable infrastructure strategy.
In 2024, Gebruder Weiss generated revenues of EUR 2.71 billion. With its commitment to sustainability and innovation, the company is well-positioned to continue its growth while minimising its environmental impact.
Gebruder Weiss's portfolio includes transport and logistics solutions, digital services, and supply chain management. As it continues to expand and innovate, it is clear that sustainability will remain a key focus. The company's actions serve as a strong example for other logistics providers looking to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.
