'Bots Offer Non-Judgmental Companionship': UAE Residents Seek Love and Friendship in AI Relationships

In the digital age, UAE residents are leaning on artificial intelligence (AI) for companionship, advice, and even romance, as they navigate shifting social dynamics.

This surge in AI buddy usage mirrors a broader shift in emotional behavior and expectations. According to Andreas Hassellöf, CEO of Ombori and Phygrid, the widespread use of smartphones and advanced digital infrastructure in the UAE underscores a growing inclination to redefine companionship through technology.

While text-based AI models reign supreme, there's a noticeable shift toward more immersive, multi-modal experiences integrating voice and visual elements. Hassellöf notes that the popularity of AI girlfriend applications is spreading globally, particularly among younger generations.

Data suggests that one in four adults worldwide has dabbled in flirtatious AI interactions, hinting at a transformation in how people, especially digital natives, explore connections. In the UAE, this trend translates to robust local engagement with generative AI technologies, with the local AI companion market currently estimated to be worth approximately $734 million and expected to swell to $3.6 billion by 2030, according to Horizon Grand Vew Research. The UAE, with its 2.6 percent share of the global market, is poised to lead the Middle East and Africa.

A Boston Consulting Group report reveals that 91 percent of UAE consumers are aware of generative AI, and 34 percent are active users, with engagement among students even higher. These figures underscore a digitally astute youth population increasingly comfortable with integrating AI into their personal and emotional lives.

On a global scale, the AI girlfriend market was valued at around $2.8 billion in 2024, with projections reaching $9.5 billion by 2028, according to Artsmart.ai data.

The allure of AI companions stems from the scarcity of human availability and emotional support in modern life. As Deepak Renganathan, AI expert and author of 'AI - The Ultimate Marketing Game Changer,' explains, people often feel too busy to genuinely listen to each other, contributing to widespread loneliness. AI companions, acting as virtual confidants, counsellors, or psychiatrists, provide emotional support in a non-judgmental space that many users find soothing.

As AI relationships evolve, these chatbots begin to adapt to individual users, understanding patterns in their emotional states, routines, and needs. Over time, they recognize when an individual is feeling low, upset, or happy—learn to cater to their emotions, and adapt their responses accordingly.

A few platforms offering AI girlfriend experiences have gained global prominence, with Replika and Character.ai leading the pack. These platforms allow safe and respectful communication, offering support, reducing feelings of loneliness, and providing tailored virtual partners that enhance emotional engagement. Some platforms permit explicit content and adult-themed conversations, while others steer clear of NSFW interactions.

While AI companions may offer solace, mental health experts caution about the potential consequences, particularly in romantic relationships. Prolonged reliance on AI may lead to emotional detachment from human partners, weakening trust and intimacy. AI's limitations in replicating the depth of human understanding and empathy may also trigger jealousy or conflict within relationships.

Communication, setting clear boundaries, and prioritizing human connections are key for couples navigating this new digital era. According to Dr Nidhi Kumar, specialist psychiatrist at Aster Clinic, the impact of AI companions depends on individual circumstances and how each couple chooses to engage with these emerging technologies.
