BMW X3 M electric vehicle production could commence in November 2027, allegedly.
The automotive world is abuzz with anticipation as BMW prepares to unveil its next generation of high-performance electric vehicles. Here's a rundown of the exciting developments on the horizon.
If all goes according to plan, the first prototypes of the electric BMW X3 M will appear in 2026, with production slated for November 2027. This timeline aligns with the new generation of BMW M3 and X3 models, which will feature high-performance electric variants.
The electric X3 M, codenamed "ZA5," is expected to receive the dual-motor xDrive treatment from day one, promising blistering acceleration and an even bigger punch. In fact, the M Performance variant of the X3 M, codenamed M60, could push past 600 horsepower.
Meanwhile, the inline-six (S58) and V8 (S68) engines are being reworked to meet Euro 7 standards. However, the X3 M with an inline-six is not returning, leaving the M50 as the top combustion-powered version.
BMW is also set to introduce an electric crossover counterpart of the M3, joining the lineup alongside the electric X3 M. The iX4, reportedly in the works, should spawn both M variants.
The electric M3 sedan, codenamed "ZA0," is scheduled to enter production in March 2027, and the upcoming i3 sedan will also be produced in Munich. The sedan will roll off the line in the Bavarian city, while the electric X3 M will be built at the new Debrecen plant in Hungary.
Interestingly, the iX3 50 xDrive will be outmuscled by the upcoming electric X3 M. This is backed by the fact that the i4 M50, BMW M's best-selling product for three years running, has set a high bar for electric performance.
As the world moves towards a more sustainable future, BMW is embracing electric technology wholeheartedly. Additional electric Ms, including an i3 Touring and potential i4 coupe and convertible derivatives, are almost certainly on the way.
For those yearning for a fully-fledged M experience, the future lies in going electric or seeking out a used "F97" model. As gasoline-powered M3s take a backseat, the spotlight shifts towards the electrifying world of high-performance electric vehicles.
Stay tuned for more updates as BMW continues to push the boundaries of performance and sustainability.
