BLS Drops Cash: Goes Fully Cashless by Mid-2026
BLS, the leading public transport provider in the canton of Bern, is going cashless. From late 2025, all its ticket machines in the region will no longer accept cash. The majority shareholder supports this move, aiming to save around 400,000 francs annually.
The transition will begin in December 2025 and continue until mid-2026. During this period, BLS will renew its ticket machines to accept debit and credit cards, Twint, Postcard, and an anonymous prepaid card. This change aligns with the evolving payment preferences of passengers, who increasingly favour cashless transactions.
Bernmobil, however, will continue to accept cash payments at its machines, unlike other public transport companies in the region that have joined forces to achieve cost savings in ticket machine procurement and maintenance.
From the end of 2025, cash payments will no longer be possible at BLS ticket machines in the canton of Bern. Passengers are advised to use alternative payment methods. The move is expected to save BLS a significant amount annually while catering to the preferences of modern passengers.
