Bitkom President Proposes Digital Integration for EU's Climate Strategy

Bitkom President Achim Berg has proposed a series of measures to integrate digital technology into Europe's climate strategy. Speaking during Germany's EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2020, Berg emphasized the role of digital transformation in tackling climate change and achieving sustainability.

Berg suggested that the upcoming European climate law should have a 'digital DNA' to facilitate the EU-wide green transformation. He proposed that the law should aim for climate neutrality by 2050 and a significant reduction of CO2 emissions by 2030 through digital technologies.

Berg highlighted several ways digital innovation can contribute to sustainability. He proposed that Industry 4.0 sensors and smart machinery can minimize energy consumption in manufacturing. Additionally, he suggested that 3D printing can reduce waste of resources in manufacturing. Berg also mentioned that video conferencing can replace flights for management purposes to reduce emissions.

During Germany's EU Council Presidency, Berg emphasized the digital aspect of European climate regulation. He proposed that the German Presidency should prioritize this aspect, which it did, with leading German representatives highlighting the digital side of climate protection regulation during their term.

Bitkom President Achim Berg's proposals reflect the growing recognition of digital technology's role in combating climate change. His suggestions, including the integration of digital innovation into the European climate law, could significantly impact Europe's green transformation. Berg's emphasis on digital aspects during Germany's EU Council Presidency also demonstrates the importance of this topic in European climate regulation.
