Berlin acquires a house dedicated to gaming experiences

Games are taking over Berlin, and things are about to get even more exciting! The House of Games, a new hub for the gaming industry, is set to open its doors in the heart of the city. This disruptive, 15,000-square-meter coworking and innovation space will provide a home for developers, esports firms, startups, tech providers, researchers, and freelancers from the gaming sector.

Berlin's governing mayor, Kai Wegner (CDU), and the senator for economics, Franziska Giffey (SPD), announced the highly anticipated project on Tuesday in a press event. Construction work is set to begin soon, with an expected opening in early 2026. This ambitious endeavor is backed by the Senate with an investment of 4.6 million euros.

A Hub of Innovation and Growth

The House of Games will be a self-proclaimed lighthouse for the gaming industry in Berlin and beyond. This five-story brick building, located in Friedrichshain, will bring together established companies, start-ups, and freelancers, fostering collaboration, networking, ideas, and creativity.

Berlin's economic growth above the national average in recent years can be attributed to its diverse range of industries and a focus on tech growth sectors. With the House of Games, the city is striving to maintain its competitive edge by embracing the gaming industry, which has exhibited an incredibly dynamic growth in the region.

Wegner emphasized the unique nature of The House of Games, stating, "there is no such House of Games in Germany, Bavaria, or internationally." This one-of-a-kind architecture offers coworking spaces, multifunctional studios, event and exhibition zones, and a gaming museum, all aimed at promoting cross-disciplinary exchange among industry professionals. Ubisoft has already been confirmed as the anchor tenant, and over 25 other companies have expressed interest in occupying the space.

A Boost for the German Gaming Scene

The computer games industry in Berlin boasts approximately 350 companies, employing more than 4,000 people and generating a total annual turnover of over 400 million euros last year. Despite its potential, the German developer scene currently only captures a small share of the billion-dollar global gaming market, with an estimated five percent of revenues coming from games developed in Germany. The House of Games in Berlin aims to boost the local gaming industry, attracting both domestic and international companies and contributing to the city's status as a premier gaming capital.
