Base Model of Upcoming iPhone 17 Might Forgo Significant Performance Enhancement
The upcoming base model of the iPhone 17 may underwhelm those seeking a significant upgrade, according to analyst Jeff Pu from GF Securities. As reported by MacRumors, the standard iPhone 17 is expected to feature the same A18 chip as its predecessor, the iPhone 16, manufactured using TSMC's 3nm process. Additionally, the standard iPhone 17 will reportedly come with 8GB of RAM, the same as the iPhone 16.
In stark contrast, the iPhone 17 Pro models are rumored to be equipped with A19 Pro chips, while the long-anticipated ultra-slim iPhone 17 Air is expected to sport an A19 chip. This distinction in chip performance could be a strategy by Apple to encourage customers to opt for the higher-end models.
The iPhone 16, however, has already garnered praise for its performance with the A18 chip and access to Apple Intelligence. Consequently, the decision to maintain the same chip for the iPhone 17 base model may seem peculiar, considering the entire iPhone 16 lineup, including the budget iPhone 16e, launched this spring, also features an A18 chip.
Rumors suggest that the iPhone 17 will boast a faster 120Hz display and a 24-megapixel front camera, double the 60Hz and 12MP on the iPhone 16, respectively. However, there's conflicting information regarding the iPhone 17's display size. While some analysts predict a 6.3-inch screen, up from the 6.1-inch screen on the iPhone 16, other sources claim the screen size will remain unchanged.
The budget iPhone, expected to become an annual release, faces uncertainty if the iPhone 17 fails to offer significant upgrades. Similarly, the base iPhone's position in the market could be compromised if it offers minimal improvements over the iPhone 16e, especially considering the iPhone 16e's relatively high price point.
Apple is slated to unveil the iPhone 17 family in September, during its usual fall window for new handsets.
Relevant Enrichment Data:- According to some display analysts, the iPhone 17 is supposed to feature a larger display, with a screen size increasing from 6.1 inches on the iPhone 16 to about 6.3 inches diagonally. This change would unify the screen size for the base iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro models, marking a departure from the difference in screen sizes observed in the previous generation. However, it is expected that the Pro model will still surpass the base model in other specifications[1].
Smartphones in the iPhone 17 lineup, such as the base model and the Pro series, are expected to incorporate advanced technology, with the A19 and A19 Pro chips powering the Pro models and the A18 chip still powering the base model. Additionally, gadget enthusiasts may anticipate the inclusion of smartphones with larger displays, as rumors suggest the iPhone 17 base model's screen size could increase from 6.1 inches to around 6.3 inches diagonally.
