Barnes & Noble's PubIT program, launched last year, offers a platform for independent authors to publish ebooks and print books primarily for the U.S. market. The program has several significant benefits, including a free publishing platform, a competitive 70% royalty rate on ebook sales, faster payments, and print-on-demand options[1].

The program supports the ePUB format, which is also supported by Barnes & Noble E-Readers, as well as Sony, Kobo, and Pandigital. This wide compatibility makes it easier for authors to reach a larger audience[1].

In just a few months, the program has attracted over 11,000 authors, who can submit their content and become officially launched within 24 to 72 hours[1]. Barnes & Noble Vice President, Digital Content, Theresa Horner, expressed satisfaction with the variety and quality of content on PubIT[1].

One of the program's success stories is H.P. Mallory, author of several successful paranormal romance books. Mallory called PubIt an incredible experience and one of the best decisions she ever made[1]. Other authors, like Beth Orsoff and Lisa Cortés, have also found success on the platform[1].

Barnes & Noble is utilizing their tangible retail spaces and large book stores to showcase their own authors and build their brand internally. They are considering showcasing more authors at their various locations through artist panels[1].

This strategy aims to draw attention to their digital publishing initiative and give an advantage over competitors like Amazon, which, with its virtual website only, cannot put its own authors in the forefront[1].

The PubIt program has reached a milestone of 11,000 published works, with 35 of these in the top 200 best sellers[1]. This success is likely to continue, as the program is set to potentially double the number of authors using it in another four months[1].

On a future event at Barnes and Noble, consumers who take a guided tour of Nook Color will be offered a free tall cup of Starbucks coffee[2]. This initiative not only promotes the Nook Color but also the content available on the PubIt program.
