Banks' proprietary software being trialed for social media censorship by Australian institutions
In a move aimed at creating safer online environments for younger users, ConnectID, an identity verification tool owned by Australia's top lenders, has partnered with Singapore-based age estimation provider, k-ID.
For several years, ConnectID has been working with major partners on ID verification, and this collaboration is set to bring real-time age verification to Australian platforms. Kieran Donovan, CEO of k-ID, stated that this partnership can help Australian platforms offer a safer environment for younger players.
ConnectID's unique approach to age verification links a website to a user's bank account, providing an anonymous bank account signal for verification. This stand-alone solution is being offered as a potential response to the Australian government's encouragement for social media firms to offer progressively more accurate options for age confirmation.
The partnership between ConnectID and k-ID was tested in a government-commissioned trial of age-assurance technology this year. While the trial results do not provide specific information on which social media companies are currently testing the partnership project, some Australian companies are reportedly involved.
K-ID, known for its facial estimation technology, supplies age estimation for the chatroom-focused platform Discord in Britain. The companies aim to sell their partnership to gaming platforms in Australia, which face separate laws for content moderation for younger users.
It's important to note that as of now, no clients have signed up for help with the Australian social media ban using ConnectID. K-ID declined to specify which social media companies in Australia are testing the pairing.
The use of age-guessing software can enforce the ban, but selfie-based age estimation systems had lower accuracy around the 16-year-old cut-off age in the trial. As the partnership between ConnectID and k-ID progresses, it remains to be seen how this innovative solution will impact the online safety and age verification practices of Australian social media platforms.
