Car-free school street in Baden-Württemberg tested - Baden-Württemberg Trials 'School Streets' to Boost Safety and Ease Traffic
In response to chaotic traffic and a high accident risk near schools, Baden-Württemberg has introduced 'school streets' and 'school zones'. Kirchheim unter Teck is the latest city to trial this, following Stuttgart's lead.
The initiative aims to reduce 'parent taxis', where parents drive their children to school. In Germany, one in four primary school children is typically dropped off by car. The pilot project in Kirchheim unter Teck temporarily closes a section in front of the Freihof school complex to vehicles on Wednesdays during school start and end times.
Last year, 378 traffic accidents were recorded on the school route in Kirchheim unter Teck, a decrease from the previous year's 423 accidents. The goal is to gather insights for broader implementation of school streets and school zones throughout the state.
The school street in Kirchheim unter Teck seeks to enhance safety for children and alleviate traffic congestion during school hours. The project's success will inform wider adoption of school streets and school zones across Baden-Württemberg.
