Babcock Canada & Hanwha Ocean Team Up for Canadian Patrol Submarine Project
Babcock Canada and Hanwha Ocean have joined forces, signing a teaming agreement for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP). This deal strengthens their relationship and aims to replace Canada's aging Victoria-class submarines with a modern fleet capable of operating across various waters.
Tony March, CEO of Babcock Canada, expressed that this agreement fortifies their bond with Hanwha Ocean. Babcock, already leading Canada's submarine sustainment, will now collaborate with Hanwha Ocean as its exclusive in-service support partner for the CPSP bid.
The CPSP, intended to deliver up to 12 new submarines, seeks to provide Canada with a modern fleet that can operate effectively in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic. If selected, the first four submarines are expected to be delivered by 2035.
Steve Jeong, Hanwha Ocean's head of naval ship global business, believes this partnership offers Canada the lowest risk and most reliable solution. Hanwha Ocean can provide the first KSS-III variant in just six years from contract award, followed by one per year thereafter. The company brings extensive design and construction expertise, enabling it to offer both build and through-life sustainment services.
Hanwha Ocean, recently shortlisted as one of two qualified suppliers for the CPSP, has appointed Kim Jong-gun as the leader of its venture for this project. With Babcock Canada's support, Hanwha Ocean is poised to provide Canada with a state-of-the-art submarine fleet, ensuring its naval capabilities remain robust and reliable.
