Automotive industry debuts high-grade ceramic capacitors by Vishay Intertechnology, featuring Y1 rating in SMD casing.
In a significant development for the electric vehicle industry, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has unveiled a new series of Automotive Grade AC line rated ceramic disc safety capacitors. This innovative series, manufactured by Tai-Tech, marks a groundbreaking milestone as it is the first to offer a Y1 rating in a surface-mount casing.
The Y1 rating of these capacitors stands at 500 VAC and 1500 VDC, making them ideal for use in on-board chargers (OBC), traction inverters, battery management systems (BMS), e-compressors, and AC/DC converters in electric (EV), hybrid electric (HEV), and plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) vehicles.
The devices, part of the Vishay BCcomponents SMDY1 Automotive Series, consist of a copper-plated ceramic disc encapsulated with flame-resistant epoxy resin in accordance with UL 94 V-0. This design ensures their suitability for use in harsh, high humidity environments, such as those found in electric vehicles.
One of the key advantages of the SMDY1 Automotive Series capacitors is their ability to provide EMI / RFI suppression and filtering in these challenging conditions. They are available in two case sizes: the C case with a creepage distance of 10 mm, and the D case with a creepage distance of 14.5 mm.
Unlike leaded components, the SMDY1 Automotive Series devices offer a low, flat profile on the PCB, enabling flat casings or backside PCB mounting without the clearance space required by through-hole capacitors. This feature reduces production costs due to their compatibility with surface-mount assembly and reflow soldering process.
The high capacitance of the Vishay BCcomponents SMDY1 Automotive Series devices is 4.7 nF. The capacitors are RoHS-compliant and halogen-free, and they offer high humidity resistance with a Class IIB humidity grade (in accordance with IEC60384-14 annex I).
In addition, the SMDY1 Automotive Series components can withstand the 85 / 85 / 1000 h test, ensuring their reliability under extreme conditions. Furthermore, they are AEC-Q200 qualified and PPAP is available, ensuring their automotive-grade quality.
This new series of capacitors is set to revolutionise the electric vehicle industry, offering a more efficient, reliable, and cost-effective solution for the power needs of EVs, HEVs, and PHEVs.
