Artificial Intelligence Help Evokes Similarities to Amazon's Alexa
In the realm of technology, there's been a significant push to infuse smart assistants with AI capabilities, but a new poll by YouGov reveals that people's interactions with these tools haven't changed drastically. Tech companies are grappling with the challenges that prevent users from fully embracing AI assistants.
The polling firm's data shows that Amazon's Alexa, Google's Assistant, and Apple's Siri, all equipped with AI enhancements, are primarily used for basic tasks. The majority of interactions involve checking the weather (59%), playing music (51%), looking up answers to questions (47%), and setting alarms and timers (40%).
However, there seems to be a communication barrier between humans and AI assistants. Over one in four people find that their biggest challenge in using a smart assistant is the AI not understanding their request. Another 12% of people encounter accuracy issues with AI assistants.
Despite these challenges, the survey found that only 14% of people use their AI assistants for shopping, which is projected to be a $30 billion industry in the next decade. Similarly, the widespread adoption of more advanced features like controlling internet-connected devices and using third-party actions is still low, with less than one in 10 people interacting with these features.
Interestingly, the most desired feature of smart assistants is not the ability to hold a conversation or complete multi-step tasks, but rather to better understand speech. This suggests that improvements in speech recognition could significantly enhance user satisfaction.
Google's Assistant, for instance, has been made more conversational with the help of Google's Gemini AI. However, only 19% of people use their AI assistants to control internet-connected devices in their homes.
Despite the investments of hundreds of billions of dollars in the development of artificial intelligence models and supporting infrastructure, 10% of people find that AI assistants are not as smart as they expected. This underscores the need for tech companies to better understand and address the issues that prevent people from using AI assistants more frequently.
In conclusion, while AI technology has made strides in the smart assistant domain, there's still room for improvement. The most desired feature remains better speech understanding, indicating that focusing on this area could lead to increased user adoption and satisfaction.
