Aqua Computer's Ampinel to Enhance 12VHPWR Connector Safety

Aqua Computer is set to launch a new product, Ampinel, aimed at enhancing the safety of 12VHPWR connectors used in graphics cards. This comes amidst concerns about these connectors posing a fire hazard.

The 12VHPWR connector, particularly its revision 12V-2×6, has gained notoriety for causing fires when connecting graphics cards. This issue stems from a combination of user errors and design flaws in the standard, which allows up to 50 amperes on a single line, generating significant heat.

Aqua Computer's Ampinel controller offers active counteractions to mitigate these risks. It monitors all lines of the 12VHPWR cable and intervenes when the current exceeds 7.5 amperes. The device also provides load distribution, warnings, and emergency shutdown features. Over 40 measurement values, including current, voltage, and power for each line, can be displayed using Aqua Computer's software. A first test of the Ampinel on igor'sLAB has drawn a very positive conclusion.

The Ampinel is expected to be released in mid-November, with pre-orders starting soon at €79.90. By providing a solution to the fire hazard, Aqua Computer's Ampinel aims to make the use of 12VHPWR connectors in graphics cards safer and more reliable.
