In Saxony, Germany, the Reparaturbonus – a state-supported subsidy for the repair of electronic devices – has been a significant step towards promoting sustainability and reducing electronic waste. The initiative, introduced in 2023 under the Ministry of the Environment, has been well-received by both consumers and the local craft industry.

The Reparaturbonus covers 50% of the repair costs, up to a maximum of 200 euros, for a variety of electronic devices, including phones, washing machines, and toasters. The program supports up to two repairs per person per year. Previously, the Reparaturbonus was part of a model project and cannot be continued due to legal reasons.

The funding for the Reparaturbonus comes from the climate fund, with the Saxon state budget securing an allocation of one million euros each for 2025 and 2026. Additionally, the program receives an extra 2.1 million euros from "unbounded remaining funds" in the climate fund.

However, the future of the Reparaturbonus funding remains uncertain. A decision on the structure of the Reparaturbonus is expected to be made soon by the Ministry of Economics, and the release of funds from the climate fund requires a decision by the Household and Finance Committee of the State Parliament.

Former Environment Minister Günther emphasized that the Reparaturbonus has helped to avoid tons of electronic waste, aligning with broader environmental and sustainability policies in Germany. The craft industry has also spoken in favour of continuing the Reparaturbonus, as local workshops have benefited from it.

For the most current official details on the structure of the Reparaturbonus and its funding mechanism in 2025 and 2026, it is recommended to consult the Saxony Ministry for Environment, Climate Protection, Agriculture and Geology or official Saxony state government publications. These sources will have the confirmed and updated policy structure.

Stay tuned for updates on the Reparaturbonus in Saxony and how it continues to contribute to sustainability and waste reduction.
