Apple's New Patent: Moving Prism for Revolutionary Smartphone Videography

Apple has filed a new patent detailing a camera module with a moving prism, set to revolutionize iPhone videography. This innovative design promises enhanced focus adjustment, improved stability, and extended recording times.

The core of this patent is a prism positioned beneath the lens. This prism redirects light towards an image sensor located on the same side as the lens. An actuator moves the prism along the optical axis, altering the optical path and enabling focus adjustment without shifting heavy glass groups. This not only saves height in the iPhone camera stack but also opens up possibilities for a larger sensor, larger battery, or more robust actuator hardware.

The sensor's dedicated motion budget for stabilization results in smoother, less jumpy handheld iPhone shots. Users can expect improvements in focus speed on the telephoto module, macro utility, reduced focus breathing, longer continuous recording, and stability in fine handheld motion. The moving prism can extend the effective autofocus stroke, pulling minimum focus closer on telephoto modules for better detail shots. This patent is part of a system that includes previous work on suspension and actuator technology for improved iPhone camera capabilities. Improved heat flow due to a slimmer vertical stack and a sensor hugging the chassis ensures more stable frame rates over time. The image sensor stabilizes in x and y while the prism moves, enabling quicker focus, cleaner stabilization, and longer recording times.

Apple's new patent, 'Camera Module With Moving Prism', promises significant advancements in iPhone camera technology. With enhanced focus adjustment, improved stability, and extended recording times, users can anticipate a superior photography experience in future iPhone models. The responsibility for the development and market entry of this patent lies with Apple Inc. and its dedicated engineering and design teams.
