Apple should introduce the iPhone Ultra in 2026, potentially phasing out the Pro Max model permanently.
The tech world is abuzz with rumours about Apple's upcoming iPhone lineup, and here's what we know so far.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max, a larger version of the iPhone 17 Pro, is being positioned as a basis for creating a more premium and innovative iPhone, potentially named "iPhone Ultra" on HBO Max. This new high-end iPhone is rumoured to push boundaries and adopt features from gaming phones, such as bigger batteries and high refresh rate screens.
The iPhone Ultra, if released, could offer a 4K display, although it may pose challenges for the battery to handle. It's also speculated to feature a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra-style 200MP main camera lens and a telephoto camera with 10x optical zoom and 100x AI-enhanced digital zoom. There's even a possibility of a switch back to titanium for the iPhone Ultra, depending on Apple's satisfaction with the material's thermally efficiency.
Meanwhile, the iPhone Fold, another anticipated addition to the lineup, could fill a niche market and potentially launch in fall 2026. This foldable device is rumoured to be in development by Apple.
Apple has discontinued the smaller versions of the standard iPhone, the iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini, due to lack of sales. On the other hand, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the most expensive iPhone currently available, has proven to be a popular choice, with the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro Max being the best-selling models after their release dates.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max offers a large 6.9-inch screen and good battery life, making it an attractive option for those seeking a larger device. However, it's important to note that it offers the same specs and performance as the iPhone 17 Pro, but at a higher price.
In addition to these, Apple has experimented with enhanced durability and 3D-printed USB-C ports in the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The company has also stopped releasing Plus-sized models that don't sell in large numbers.
Lastly, the iPhone Air, a new iPhone model that focuses on style and design rather than being the best at everything, could help maintain the momentum of the iPhone lineup. Instead of releasing iterative updates year in and year out, the iPhone Ultra could offer different directions for the iPhone lineup.
The person responsible for the decision on the production-limited iPhone Ultra is Apple CEO Tim Cook. With these exciting developments on the horizon, it's an exciting time to be an Apple fan. Stay tuned for more updates on these upcoming devices.
