Apple Settles Siri Privacy Lawsuit for $95M
Apple faces a class action lawsuit over claims that Siri has been secretly recording and sharing private information without consent. The company has agreed to a proposed settlement of $95 million, which could potentially pay out to every Siri device owner, with a maximum of $20 per device.
The lawsuit was brought after a whistleblower, Thomas le Bonniec, revealed that he was tasked with listening to hundreds of recordings daily from various Apple devices, often taken without Siri activation. Two plaintiffs also claimed to have received targeted ads after briefly mentioning products in private conversations, suggesting Siri may have recorded these discussions.
Apple has denied any wrongdoing but has agreed to the settlement. The actual payout per device will depend on the total number of valid claims submitted and may be significantly less than $20. Some users may find filing a claim not worth the time and effort, especially those with only a few Apple devices.
The proposed settlement of $95 million is a significant development in the ongoing debate about privacy and digital assistants. If approved, it could provide compensation to Siri device owners who feel their privacy has been invaded. However, the final payout will depend on the number of valid claims submitted.
