Android phones receive a cosmetic transformation, subtly emulating the aesthetic of iPhone models.
Google has announced a new feature called Calling Cards, which is now available in the Phone and Contacts apps. This feature allows users to customize the incoming call screen for their contacts by adding full-screen photos, custom fonts, and colours that display when those contacts call them.
Unlike Apple’s Contact Posters, where you design your own outgoing caller profile that others see when you call them, Google's Calling Cards are recipient-controlled visual customizations for how you see your contacts when they call you—not for how they see you.
Key features of Google’s Calling Cards: - Users can personalize the call screen individually for each contact in their address book. - When that contact calls you, your customized full-screen card with their photo and stylized name appears during the incoming call. - Users select background images from their device or Google Photos and adjust text colour/fonts, including a “Smart Colour” mode that matches text colour to the background. - The customization is private to your device; it does not change what the contact or others see.
The Calling Cards feature resembles the Contact Poster feature available on iPhone. However, Google's approach provides a more private experience, avoiding privacy concerns that can arise with shared posters. It also lets you tailor the look for each contact on your phone distinctly, rather than having one personal poster for everyone to see.
The Calling Cards feature is currently available only to beta users, not widely available to the public. It can be found in the Phone by Google 188 beta. Opening a contact page in the Calling Cards feature will prompt users to "try adding a calling card".
The Google Photos app update includes the addition of a 'Create' tab to the bottom, which could suggest future potential for the Calling Cards feature. Furthermore, Google Messages allows setting an image similar to Calling Cards, hinting at possible expansions of this feature across Google's suite of apps.
