Ampion Launches Innovative Synthetic Community Solar Program for Low-Income Households

Ampion Renewable Energy has launched an innovative Synthetic Community Solar program, enabling low-income subscribers to benefit from solar generation in states different from their own. The program, praised as the first of its kind, offers bill credits to eligible subscribers and federal tax incentives for developers.

The program works by matching solar generation from projects in one state with low-income subscribers in another. For instance, a 2.5 MWdc project in Maine supports income-qualified households in Illinois, with funds transferred and appearing as credits on their utility bills. Ampion's President and COO, Andrew Kvaal, hails this model as innovative and groundbreaking.

Initially focused on Illinois, Ampion expects to expand the program to other geographies as it matures. The next project, located in North Carolina, will further demonstrate the Synthetic Community Solar model's potential. The program aims to overcome geographical limitations of traditional community solar programs, offering more flexibility for developers.

The Synthetic Community Solar program benefits both low-income subscribers and developers. Subscribers receive bill credits, while developers qualify for federal tax incentives and more opportunities to build projects. The program is designed to help developers qualify for the IRA's Category 4 investment tax credit bonus, ultimately benefiting low-income subscribers.
