GPD Win 5: A Powerful New Contender in Handheld Gaming
The GPD Win 5, a new handheld gaming console, is making waves in the gaming industry with its impressive specifications. Teased in late July, this device is set to make its public debut at the ChinaJoy expo in Shanghai, China.
The top-tier model of the GPD Win 5 is equipped with the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395, a powerful 16-core, 32-thread CPU, and the Radeon 8060S integrated GPU, featuring 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units. This combination delivers graphics performance comparable to mid-range discrete GPUs, with a Time Spy benchmark score of 9,680 points, just within spitting distance of the RTX 4060 record.
The device sports a 7-inch 1080p touchscreen with a 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection. It also boasts improved cooling with two fans and four heat pipes, managing the high thermal design power (TDP) that ranges from 45W to 120W. Notably, the GPD Win 5 lacks an internal battery and instead uses an 80Wh external removable battery pack, which can be mounted externally or used as a power bank.
During testing, the Win 5's CPU reached a maximum temperature of 80.3 degrees Celsius, while the exhaust vents recorded a temperature of just over 45 degrees Celsius. The fans ran at around 95dB during testing.
Pricing details for the GPD Win 5 have not been disclosed yet. However, it is estimated that the model with the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and 32GB of RAM could cost over $1,500. A more affordable variant, featuring the Ryzen AI Max 385 and an integrated Radeon 8050S GPU, is expected to be priced lower.
