Amazon Kindle e-Book Reader Enhancements in Version 5.18.5 Update

In a recent update, Amazon has introduced several improvements to the reading experience on Kindle devices, specifically for the 11th and 12th generations.

The update, version 5.18.4, integrates a large print mode designed to make operations easier for individuals with visual impairments. One of the key improvements to this mode is the ability for users to select their preferred font size individually.

In addition to the large print mode, users now have more control over text presentation. They can adjust the spacing between paragraphs, lines, and words separately, providing a customised reading experience.

The update also addresses a criticism regarding the large print mode by allowing users to choose their font size, a feature previously only available to switch on or off.

Moreover, the update includes performance improvements, bug fixes, and general optimisations to enhance the overall user experience.

Interestingly, the update does not mention any changes to Amazon's control over text presentation or to the text-to-speech feature, the reading aid, or the actual text presentation on Kindle devices.

One of the standout features of the new reading aid is the enhanced text-to-speech function, where the text location is highlighted as it's read.

It's worth noting that this reading aid is now available without regional restrictions for all users, making it more accessible to a wider audience.

The update can be started via settings or downloaded from the Support Page and installed manually.

The major improvements for support of 11th and 12th generation reading devices were developed by the organisation behind Android, with enhanced multilingual speech recognition and other functionalities introduced in Android 14 and further refined in Android 15; Android 15, which includes these usability enhancements, was released in 2024.

While Amazon may be behind other providers in terms of text presentation options, the actual text presentation on Kindle devices is among the best in the E-Book Reader category. This update is a step towards bridging that gap and providing a more inclusive and customisable reading experience.
