AI talent is scarcely being sought by German corporations

The race for Artificial Intelligence (AI) talent is heating up, but Germany seems to be stumbling on the starting blocks. A recent analysis by the Bertelsmann Foundation indicated a staggering scarcity of job listings for AI specialists in Germany, despite the critical role this technology will play in the future.

Since 2022, job listings related to AI have flatlined, causing worry for businesses who fear being outpaced in the global AI race. Companies are becoming increasingly aware that their outdated business models may be no match for AI-driven competitors, calling for a need to invest in employee competencies and a bureaucracy-free approach to AI regulation.

In the digisphere, Google is making leaps in AI development with its latest "AI Mode" release - a telling sign of the times. Yet, as more companies embrace AI, the demand for AI professionals with the right skillset persists. According to the study, despite a nearly doubling of job listings for AI-adept specialists between 2019 and 2022, they still represent mere 1.5% of all job listings.

AI Skills: In High Demand, Short Supply

In the midst of economic turbulence, the overall offer of AI-related jobs has dwindled, yet the proportion of AI positions has remained steady. Other booming sectors, such as renewable energy, maintain a higher proportion of job listings, underscoring the need for Germany to beef up its AI workforce.

Companies seeking AI-savvy employees tend to look for highly specialized developers rather than AI-adept users across various departments, like advertising, marketing, or sales. Geographically, some German urban hubs, such as Munich, Karlsruhe, and the district of Böblingen near Stuttgart, emerge as local leaders in employing AI professionals.

The global AI skills gap

Germany's struggle to find AI talent is part of a broader global challenge. Rapidly advancing technology and fierce competition for AI professionals make it difficult for educational institutions and training programs to keep apace with current AI developments. Germany's demographic challenges, including an aging population and declining birth rates, further strain the pool of potential young talents. With the global demand for AI experts showing no signs of slowing, it's becoming increasingly challenging for Germany to compete and retain AI professionals.

Immigration policies may also play a role in the shortage of AI talent. Despite Germany's loosened immigration policies, the complex and time-consuming process may deter some foreign experts from choosing Germany as their destination of choice. Ultimately, catching up in the AI revolution relies on a concerted effort to address these challenges and establish Germany as a hub for AI innovation and growth.
