In the world of filmmaking, breaking into the industry and securing funding can often be a daunting task. This is where Autodesk's Flow Studio comes in, a groundbreaking AI tool designed to make filmmaking more accessible.

Flow Studio's unique approach sets it apart from other generative video models. Instead of relying on a single model, it uses separate models for character, camera, environment, and lighting, enabling a more nuanced and realistic video output.

Unlike some AI tools, Flow Studio is not geared towards creating viral clips. Rather, it is designed to help filmmakers think in terms of cameras, characters, and lights, providing them with the tools they need to create their vision.

Autodesk has introduced a new tiered pricing model for Flow Studio, including a 'freemium' license, making it more accessible to a wider range of creators.

Nikola Todorovic, the founder of Flow Studio, is a testament to the tool's potential. Having moved to the U.S. at 20 and worked as a VFX artist and supervisor, he understands the challenges of breaking into filmmaking. Now, he is helping steer the AI software within Autodesk.

Todorovic believes in the importance of traditional editing methods and wants to avoid automating the entire process. He acknowledges that even with Flow's early wins, cleanup and manual editorial work are still required.

Flow Studio is making waves in larger studio contexts, but Todorovic's excitement lies with indie creators and smaller production companies. He sees the tool as a means to expand the field of storytelling, not as a replacement for human creators.

In fact, Flow Studio's approach is to augment, not replace, the filmmaker's vocabulary. It aims to deliver not just a rendered video, but the metadata that makes the render usable inside a 3D scene.

Flow Studio started life as an integration into Maya to help prepare characters and transfer rich data back into pipeline tools. Now, its roadmap includes merging with other content tools, particularly MotionMaker and FaceAnimator within Autodesk.

Nikola Todorovic sees a gradual shift in the film industry towards the use of generative AI tools. He expects this shift to begin with social media, advertising, and music videos, and eventually move towards feature work.

The conversation about Flow Studio took place at Autodesk University 2025, where Todorovic discussed the potential of this innovative AI software. While details about which film production companies are currently using Autodesk's AI software Flow Studio are not publicly available, its potential is undeniable.

As we look towards the next decade, Todorovic believes the focus will not be on whether AI replaces filmmakers, but rather on how these tools can raise the bar for what those filmmakers can imagine and build. Flow Studio is a step in that direction, offering a proposition rather than a threat to the film industry.
