AI and data serve as the foundation for DLA's digital strategy
Defense Logistics Agency Modernizes Supply Chain Systems
The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is embarking on a mission to modernize its supply chain systems, aiming to improve efficiency, resilience, and responsiveness.
Currently, the DLA is grappling with a multitude of disparate supply chain systems, lacking proper data integration for AI tools and forecasting. Recognizing this challenge, the agency is focusing on modernizing nine different systems.
Brad Bunn, the DLA's Vice Director, has outlined a strategy to address these issues. This includes standardizing processes, implementing unified digital platforms, enhancing data interoperability, and fostering cross-system collaboration. The goal is to integrate all systems and have a common digital thread for understanding supply chains from factory to battlefield and protecting them from cyber threats.
The DLA is also developing citizen developers, who will be equipped with the technology, tools, and skills to solve problems on the ground using AI. This initiative aims to move the DLA from manual tasks to mission-critical thinking, improving data fluency among employees.
The supply chain modernization will bring benefits in various areas. For instance, it will enhance inventory management, auditability for financial management, and customer service. DLA Director, Army Lt. Gen. Mark Simerly, emphasizes a forward-leaning mindset in supporting innovation and mission excellence.
The DLA's modernization plans expand upon the four pillars of its 2025-2030 Strategic Plan: People, Posture, Precision, and Partnerships. The first priority focuses on transforming the agency workforce and increasing competency in understanding data.
In addition, the DLA is leveraging advanced technology in its storage and distribution network, similar to an Amazon fulfillment center, and using data across the entire supply chain. This will help the DLA move faster, think smarter, improve data integration, and increase innovation, responsiveness, and resilience.
However, the DLA is facing a $50 million budget cut next year compared to 2024. Despite this challenge, the agency remains committed to its modernization efforts. Understanding the data thread from the commercial side to DLA's possession, during transit, customer orders, and end-user delivery is crucial for visibility and timely delivery.
