Affordable heating solution: This startup reveals its strategy to cut heat pump costs in half

Jetson, a Vancouver-based startup specializing in heat pumps, has announced the rollout of its own heat pump, the Jetson Air. This innovative product is the result of a partnership with an undisclosed manufacturer, marking a significant step forward in Jetson's mission to make heat pumps more accessible and affordable.

Jetson's new business model involves vertical integration to reduce costs. The company stores heat pumps in its own warehouses and has its own in-house installers. This strategy has allowed Jetson to install heat pumps in nearly 1,000 homes in Colorado, Massachusetts, and British Columbia, Canada.

In some markets, Jetson can offer heat pumps for as low as $5,000 due to rebates and lower costs. Whole-home ducted heat pump projects in areas where Jetson operates typically cost between $25,000 to $30,000, a significant reduction compared to the cost of a new gas furnace plus air conditioner, which is estimated to be around $8,000 to $10,000 for the gas furnace and $3,000 to $5,000 for the air conditioner.

Heat pumps are a way to cut pollution from fossil-fueled heaters and boilers. Swapping a fossil-fueled heater for a heat pump can cut carbon emissions as much as trading a gas car for an electric vehicle. Fossil-fueled heaters and boilers emit around 3 to 6 metric tons of carbon emissions per household annually, a concerning figure considering more than 80 million homes in the U.S. and Canada burn fossil fuels for heat.

Jetson's installers use electric vans, further reducing the carbon footprint of the installation process. The Jetson Air heat pumps can both warm and cool spaces, making them a versatile solution for homeowners.

Unfortunately, the federal government is pulling back incentives for HVAC tech, which could potentially slow down the adoption of heat pumps. However, Jetson's commitment to reducing costs and making heat pumps more affordable may help offset this challenge.

In exciting news, Jetson plans to expand into New York in a few weeks, bringing its affordable and eco-friendly heat pumps to more homes across North America.
