450+ Industry Leaders Gather to Boost Central Germany's Hydrogen Economy
Over 450 industry representatives convened at the 5th Central German Hydrogen Congress, focusing on building the Central German hydrogen network and accelerating the market uptake of green hydrogen. The event, held in Leipzig, brought together key players from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia to discuss the region's burgeoning hydrogen economy.
The congress was organised by HYPOS e.V., a regional initiative dedicated to promoting hydrogen technology and the energy transition. Led by a collaborative team involving academic institutions, industry, and regional stakeholders, HYPOS aims to develop and operate a regional hydrogen network, support the hydrogen economy, and drive structural transformation through innovative hydrogen projects.
The event was marked by several significant announcements. Axel Klug, CEO of HYPOS, stressed the necessity of reliable framework conditions for investments in hydrogen. Jörn-Heinrich Tobaben, CEO of the European Metropolitan Region of Central Germany, highlighted the region's emerging status as a central hub of the German hydrogen economy. The congress also saw the publication of the 5th edition of the Central German Hydrogen Atlas, documenting over 70 regional projects and actors in infrastructure, value creation, research, networks, and further education.
Over 30 experts shared insights on current developments in three specialist sessions, covering storage solutions and applications in industry and mobility. State secretaries from the three federal states joined Dominik Härle, CEO of the Initiative for Hydrogen in East Germany, to discuss strategies for building the hydrogen economy. The event was supported by Ontras Gastransport GmbH as the premium partner and the State Energy Agency of Saxony-Anhalt (LENA) as a cooperation partner.
The 5th Central German Hydrogen Congress underscored the region's commitment to driving the hydrogen economy forward. With over 450 industry representatives in attendance and the publication of the Central German Hydrogen Atlas, the event demonstrated the growing momentum behind the region's hydrogen initiatives. As the hydrogen network expands and market uptake accelerates, the Central German region continues to solidify its position as a key player in Germany's energy transition.
